Replace a media file without breaking its links

Enable Media Replace swaps a media file while keeping the same WordPress attachment.

Back up site files and the database before using it.

Install and activate the plugin only from its official WordPress.org page.

Open a test item in the Media Library and choose Replace media.

The new file should be the expected type, such as an image replacing an image.

Simple replacement normally keeps the previous filename and URL.

If changing the filename or date, read that option’s explanation before confirming.

After replacement, refresh a page that uses the image and inspect it.

Site or browser cache may show the old version, so also test in a private window.

Begin with an unimportant media item before replacing a critical file.
